![]() ![]() ![]() The Little Princesses was published in 1950 to a furore we cannot imagine today. Beginning at the quiet family home in Piccadilly in the early 1930s and ending with the birth of Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace in 1948, Crawfie tells how she brought the princesses up to be 'Royal' whilst also exposing them to the ordinary world of underground trains, buses and swimming lessons. Marion Crawford, 'Crawfie', as she was known to the Queen and Princess Margaret, became governess to the children of the Duke and Duchess of York in the early 1930s, little suspecting she was nurturing her future Queen. Their private lives are now the stuff of soap opera and it seems any one who comes into contact with them sells their story to the magazines or to the newspapers. In little more than fifty years the regard with which the Royal Family are held has changed out of all recognition. ![]()

I'd seen the Fried Green Tomatoes movie several times, but it's been years since I'd sat down and watched it all in one sitting, so it was nice to not have the movie fresh in my mind when diving into the reading experience. I picked up the book to finally read it in anticipation of Fannie Flagg's upcoming novel, The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop, which returns to the same small town of Whistle Stop, Alabama. Fried Green Tomatoes is a classic - both book and film-wise. Reviewing the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafewas one of the most challenging books to review and rate in a while. ![]() ![]() It just felt right! Instead, the tone is set by the title: The Proudest Blue. Told from the perspective of the younger sister, Faizah, the preconceptions behind the 'whispers, laughs and shouts' are understated. The simple illustrations and story-telling style give the story an air of innocence, while confronting the prejudices faced by Muslim girls. The authors, Olympic fencing medallist Ibtihaj Muhammad and SK Ali, can speak of this from experience but their book is subtle, not angry. ![]() There might not be a story at all, were it not for the ugly truth of Islamophobic bullying that wearing hijab can unleash.
